How to chose the right size of liner
Sizing your liner correctly is very important. Nothing is more frustrating than ordering your pond liner only to receive it and find that it is too small for your pond! Here are the necessary steps to ensure that your purchase the appropriately sized liner:
1. To figure the length of liner needed: Add the overall length plus twice the maximum depth.
2. To figure the width of liner needed: Add the overall width plus twice the maximum depth.
3. We recommend that you add another 2’ on to these dimensions for overhang at the pond’s edge and to allow for error.
If in doubt always buy the larger liner. In addition to the liner you will also need to use an underlayment. Underlayments can add years to the life of a liner by preventing rocks and tree roots from puncturing the liner. Geotextiles or sand work the best. The old idea of newspapers or old carpet can still work for very small ponds that you will not be wading into.
The use of rock is an individual choice but it can cause problems with hold debris. Rock does provide for a more natural looking pond and does prevent UV damage.
